Haridwar to Barkot — 210 km · 7–8 Hours Through Mussoorie Hills
After breakfast, the Himalayan journey begins in earnest. The drive from Haridwar to Barkot takes approximately 7–8 hours covering 210 km — but the scenic rewards are extraordinary. The route passes through Dehradun and along the lower slopes of Mussoorie, offering pleasant views of the hill station above before climbing deeper into the Garhwal Himalayas.
The road winds through dense deodar cedar forests, past cascading waterfalls, and alongside mountain rivers. Barkot is a peaceful, charming hill town in the Uttarkashi district, set against stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges at an altitude of approximately 1,220 metres. It serves as the ideal base camp for the next day's Yamunotri trek — offering a restful, uncrowded stay after the long day's drive. Yamunotri Darshan — First Dham · Trek from Janki Chatti · Surya Kund & Divya Shila
The third day is devoted entirely to the first Dham — Yamunotri, the sacred source of the Yamuna River, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas at 3,293 metres. An early morning start from Barkot is essential. Drive approximately 35 km to Janki Chatti, the base village and the starting point of the trek to Yamunotri Temple. The road itself passes through forested valleys and riverside terrain that gradually becomes more dramatic as you near the mountains.
The trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri Temple is approximately 6 km one-way, gaining significant altitude through well-maintained mountain paths surrounded by snow-dusted Himalayan peaks, alpine meadows and the sounds of the Yamuna rushing below. Pony and palki (palanquin) services are readily available at Janki Chatti for pilgrims who need assistance — a thoughtful option for elderly devotees and families with young children.
Near the temple, pilgrims traditionally visit the Surya Kund — a natural hot spring where water bubbles at near-boiling point — and pay their respects at the Divya Shila (a sacred rock pillar) before entering the main temple. Barkot to Uttarkashi — 100 km · Kashi Vishwanath Temple & Bhagirathi River
After breakfast, depart Barkot for Uttarkashi — a sacred town approximately 100 km away on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The 4-hour drive passes through beautiful mountain valleys, narrow gorges and riverside forests before arriving in this important Himalayan town. Uttarkashi, meaning "Kashi of the North," is considered a mini-Varanasi in the mountains and is an important spiritual halt on the Char Dham route.
After checking in and refreshing, visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi — an important Lord Shiva temple that lends the town its sacred character. The temple stands on the banks of the Bhagirathi and draws pilgrims year-round. Spend some time by the Bhagirathi River — the main tributary of the Ganga that flows powerfully through Uttarkashi, offering a peaceful and spiritually charged riverside experience.

Gangotri Darshan — Second Dham · Bhagirathi River Drive · Return Uttarkashi
Day 5 is dedicated to the second Dham — Gangotri, believed to be the point where the Ganga descended to Earth. Set at an altitude of approximately 3,100 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, the Gangotri Temple is one of the most dramatically situated shrines in India — accessible entirely by road, making it a more manageable Dham for elderly pilgrims. The 100 km round trip from Uttarkashi follows the Bhagirathi River all the way to Gangotri through some of the most spectacular Himalayan scenery in Uttarakhand — dense cedar forests, towering cliff faces, glacial streams and cascading waterfalls along the entire route.
Begin early with breakfast, then drive to Gangotri (approximately 3 hours). Visit the Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, built in the early 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa. Day 6 is a long but rewarding travel day — approximately 230 km from Uttarkashi to Guptkashi / Sitapur (8–9 hours), navigating some of the most spectacular mountain roads in the Garhwal Himalayas. Guptkashi is a spiritually significant hill town in the Rudraprayag district, associated with Lord Shiva who is believed to have hidden here to avoid the Pandavas, and serves as the closest overnight halt for pilgrims before the Kedarnath trek.
The drive offers one of this yatra's most memorable scenic highlights — the en-route view of the Tehri Dam, one of the tallest dams in the world (260 metres), creating a dramatic reservoir deep in the Himalayan valleys. The drive also passes through charming Garhwali hill towns, river confluences and terraced fields carved into mountainsides — offering a rich picture of life in the Uttarakhand highlands. Kedarnath Darshan — Third Dham · Trek from Gaurikund · One of the 12 Jyotirlingas
Day 7 is the spiritual centrepiece of this entire Char Dham Yatra package from Ahmedabad. Kedarnath — one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, situated at 3,583 metres — is widely regarded as the most physically demanding and most spiritually powerful of the four Dhams. Begin with breakfast before the drive from Guptkashi to Gaurikund, the base point of the trek, approximately 30 km away.
From Gaurikund, the 16 km trek to Kedarnath Temple begins — ascending through mountain terrain alongside the Mandakini River, past waterfalls, glacial streams, and increasingly dramatic Himalayan scenery. The trek is moderately strenuous — most fit pilgrims complete it in 5–7 hours. Pony, palki (doli/palanquin) and helicopter services are available at Gaurikund for pilgrims who prefer assistance — the helicopter takes approximately 7 minutes and lands near the temple. Morning Kedarnath Darshan — Trek Down to Gaurikund · Return to Guptkashi
Begin Day 8 with an early morning visit to the Kedarnath Temple for the morning aarti and prayers — the sight of the temple emerging from misty mountain air at dawn, with the glacier-capped Kedarnath Peak glowing behind it, is one of the most unforgettable images of the entire Char Dham Yatra. After completing darshan and seeking Lord Shiva's blessings, begin the 16 km descent trek from Kedarnath to Gaurikund.
The descent is generally gentler on the knees but equally scenic — the Mandakini valley opens up below as you descend. Pony and palki services are available for the descent as well. Guptkashi to Badrinath — 190 km · Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag & Final Dham Darshan
Day 9 is the final major driving day, taking you approximately 190 km from Guptkashi to Badrinath (7–8 hours) through some of the most spiritually significant terrain in the Himalayas. En route, the journey passes two of the Panch Prayag (five sacred river confluences) — Vishnuprayag (where the Dhauliganga meets the Alaknanda) and Nandprayag (where the Nandakini joins the Alaknanda) — both held deeply auspicious in Hindu tradition.
On arrival in Badrinath at 3,133 metres on the banks of the Alaknanda River, check in and head immediately to the Badrinath Temple — the fourth and final Dham, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Badrinarayan form.
